Temporary VAT threshold breach: Does my company need to register?

Question:

I have my own limited company. Historically, turnover is normally around £80,000. However, this year I'm envisaging my turnover to be more than the £90,000 VAT threshold. This is unlikely to happen again in future years. Do I need to register for VAT, and if not, do I need to do anything? 

Arthur replies: 

See HMRC’s VAT Notice 700/1 at section 3.7, which states that if you temporarily go over the VAT threshold, you can apply to HMRC that you should not need to register for VAT. You need to be able to show HMRC that your taxable supplies will not go over the deregistration threshold in the next 12 months.
