Mileage claims for the self-employed: Can two vehicles qualify?

Question:

I am an unincorporated self-employed plumber who employs another plumber (subject to PAYE). We both have a different van to drive as the business has just commenced. Can we claim mileage for each of the two vehicles, as each vehicle will be used on a daily basis because we will be working separately?

Arthur replies:

Yes — as an unincorporated self-employed plumber in the UK, you can claim mileage for both vehicles you and your employee use for business purposes, provided the mileage is genuinely business travel and you keep the correct records. The fact you use two different vans doesn’t stop you claiming mileage for each, as long as each is used for business.
