What taxes will be due if I gift a property to my wife?

Question:

I am looking to gift or transfer a property in London to my wife. Is this possible without incurring a huge amount of tax?

Arthur Weller replies:

You can gift or transfer to your wife without any capital gains tax, as long as you are husband and wife 'living together'. If there is no change in responsibility for the mortgage on the transfer, there is no stamp duty land tax.
