If mother moves what Council Tax discounts apply?

Question:

I have a single Council Tax discount, my mother would like to move in with me. She is 82 years old. What, if any, council tax discounts apply?

Arthur Weller replies:
There are no discounts due to the fact that someone is 82. On the contrary, unfortunately, you will lose your single discount due to her moving in. However, the following may be relevant. Certain people are not counted in deciding how many residents there are, providing certain conditions are met: (a) severely mentally impaired people; and/or (b) people caring for someone with a disability who is not a spouse, partner or child under 18. Contact your council.
