What expenses can I claim?

Question:
I work at home and have a limited company.  I want to claim expenses for the use of a home office.  Would it be feasible to set up a license agreement between me and the limited company and charge the company rent?  Would this cause me as the home owner to pay tax on rental income or can I offset with equal amounts of expenses?

Arthur Weller replies:
It is feasible to set up an agreement between yourself and the limited company. The rent, if it is reasonable, will be allowable for corporation tax for the company. You can deduct from your rental income the expenses of running the office at home. The other way to claim home business expenses is as an employee of the company; however, with regard to your personal income tax situation, HMRC are very restrictive about the allowable expenses an employee (e.g. yourself as a director of your company) can claim for working at home. See pages EIM32760 to EIM32830 of the Employment Income Manual. In many cases, HMRC only allow a claim of £4 a week.
