I have started a business - how do I register for tax?

Question:

I have started my own business on Amazon FBA as a seller, do I have to register with HMRC for tax purposes, and if so, what do I do?

Arthur Weller replies:
You need to register with HMRC, either by ringing the helpline 0300 200 3500, or online via www.gov.uk/topic/business-tax/self-employed. Once a person has established self-employment he has responsibilities in relation to tax, National Insurance contributions and possibly VAT. HMRC's leaflet SE1 -- Thinking of working for yourself? -- sets out the basic requirements for those who have started, or are thinking of starting, in business.
