Can I claim mileage when travelling to/from a property I am renovating for rental?

Question:

I know that renovation costs are normally capital costs, but what about mileage? Can I claim mileage when travelling to/from a property I am renovating against rental profits?

Arthur Weller replies:
Please see www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/propertyincome-manual/pim2020 about whether renovation costs are capital expenses or revenue expenses. Mileage expense claims can be made as a revenue expense if the travelling was wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the rental business; see www.gov.uk/hmrc-internalmanuals/property-income-manual/pim2210
