At my age, do I have to pay council tax?

Question:

I am 87 years old and on a low income, but have £50,000 savings. Do I have to pay council tax now?

Arthur Weller replies:
Different councils have different rules. However, in principle you do have to pay council tax. If you live on your own you can claim a discount, perhaps 25%. If you are on a low income, you can claim under the 'council tax support scheme', or council tax benefit. However, the £50,000 savings will be taken into account in the calculation.
