Company cars and taxes

If you have a company car, you will be charged to income tax on an additional benefit in kind if your employer provides you with any fuel for private journeys – and it’s an “all or nothing”
charge, so one litre of “private” fuel brings on the full charge for the year. You can avoid this by  making good” the cost of the fuel for private mileage, using the rates per mile recommended by HMRC, but beware, this “making good” must be done during the tax year. HMRC won a case about this in 2006 and they are getting tough about it!
