Goodwill to all Mankind – Business Goodwill and Tax Planning
When tax advisers speak of “Goodwill”, they do not mean the kind that carol singers sing about. They are referring to an asset that is part of most businesses, and which can be the subject of some useful tax planning. To learn more details of this article click here

On the road again… Travel and subsistence expenses for the self-employed
Two weeks ago, I was at a hotel in London, to speak at a Workshop on Property Tax (see www.property-tax-portal.co.uk for details of the next one!). I drove to the hotel from my home in Devon, stayed the night, spoke at the Workshop, and then drove home. All the costs of the trip – the car mileage and the hotel bill – will be included as expenses in my accounts for the year. The position is simple for me, because generally I work from my office in my home, so travel to other locations on business is an allowable expense for me. Are you enjoying yourself? Tax and Business Entertainment.
I have just returned from having lunch with one of my accountant clients. His firm specialises in doing accounts for pubs, and we try to have lunch together every few weeks, taking it in turns to find a new and interesting pub for the venue – and to pay the bill. Share and Share Alike – Some Traps to Avoid When Paying Dividends from a Family Company
Generally speaking, the payment of dividends on shares is the most tax-efficient way to extract the profits from a family company. This is not always the case, but if your family company pays significant salaries to its shareholder/directors, and does not pay dividends, then you should have a word with your tax adviser to make sure you are not paying more tax than you need. Tax Tips
Client Testimonials
Thank you for sending me Issue 1, the gesture was much appreciated. Running my own retail business & a couple of properties, I find your magazine very relevant and easy to read, which is handy given the present proliferation of tax law & business regulations. I would confirm that I am currently preparing a claim for a tax repayment in excess of £2,000 based on information set out in one of the tax articles purchased from you. MONEY WELL SPENT! Keep up the good work. Regards Peter Barnett
