  • Travelling Expenses - HMRC Gets Tough

James Bailey highlights potential difficulties faced by the self-employed when travelling from home on business.  With HMRC challenging travelling expenses for the self-employed, and no clear legislative guidance, business travel can lead to expensive arguments with HMRC...
  • Entrepreneurs’ Relief: Not Many People Know This…

Ken Moody delves into some murky aspects of capital gains tax entrepreneurs’ relief, and highlights some possible pitfalls and planning opportunities. Entrepreneurs’ relief (ER) is a valuable relief, which can reduce the capital gains tax (CGT) rate on qualifying business disposals to only 10%. However, ER is not a relief to be taken for granted and, for a relatively short piece of legislation, gives rise to more than its fair share of potential pitfalls...
  • Paying A Bonus; Points to Consider

Jennifer Adams considers when a bonus may be a useful way to extract business profits. As readers of Business Tax Insider are aware, funds may be extracted from a company in a variety of ways. Are there any tax benefits to setting up a learning college?

Are there any tax benefits to setting up a learning college?
Could you please guide me as to what tax benefits may be available when setting up a learning college?  What and how can a tax saving plan be drawn for this type of college institute?

Arthur Weller Replies:
A learning college is a self employed business like any other, selling educational services to students. However from a tax perspective two things are important for you to look into. Depending on what you are doing, you may be able to get charitable status for some or all of your activities. Secondly, some of your activities may be standard rated for VAT purposes, and some may be exempt.
